The Sweet Life in Film: Movies about France and Food

Paris, je t'aime (2007)

The world's top directors and some of America's top stars create a panoramic portrait of Paris. An anthology film of 20 short films representing the 20 arrondissements of Paris. Starring Juliette Binoche, Willem Dafoe, Elijah Wood, Natalie Portman, and many more.

Chocolat (2000)

Juliette Binoche stars as a drifter who along with her daughter opens a chocolate shop in a small conservative 1960s French town. The town is mostly won over by her creations with the exception of the villainous mayor who organizes a boycott against her "sinful" treats.

Ratatouille (2007)

An animated tale that stars a rat named Remy. Remy has dreams of leaving the sewers to become a well-respected chef in Paris despite his family's wishes and the obvious problem of being a rat in a decidedly rodent-phobic profession. Putting his life on the line, Remy manages to win the hearts of the kitchen staff along with the members of the audience.

The sequel to Before Sunrise follows Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delphy) when they meet again at Jesse's book reading about their brief romance. With just a few hours before Jesse leaves, Celine takes him on a stroll through Paris and a walk down memory lane.

Amélie (2001)

This whimsical depiction of contemporary Parisian life focuses on the musings of eccentric Amélie (Audrey Tautou) and her Montmartre neighbourhood. A single waitress, Amélie spends her time attempting to help Parisians fix their lives.

Julie & Julia (2009)

Based on two true stories contrasting the past life of famous chef Julia Child (Meryl Streep) in the early years of her culinary career in Paris with the near-present life of Julie Powell (Amy Adams) an office worker in Queens who sets herself the goal of cooking all 524 recipes in Child's first book Mastering the Art of French Cooking in one year.
